Whether your plush collection is purely for display or it gets regular hugging and handling, keeping plush toys clean is important for both hygiene and longevity. The challenge is that plush toys have several different materials — fabric, fill, embroidery, possibly hard components — and cleaning methods that are safe for one may damage another. Here is how to clean your custom plush safely.
Read the Care Label First
Before doing anything else, check the care label sewn into the plush. Professional custom plush toys from JollyAnime include care instructions appropriate for the specific materials used in that product. These are your most reliable guide. If the label says surface clean only — respect that instruction. It likely means the plush contains components (electronic modules, fragile decorations, weighted inserts) that should not be submerged.
Surface Cleaning for Light Soiling
For light dust accumulation or small stains, surface cleaning is the safest approach and often all that is needed:
- Use a clean, barely damp cloth with a tiny amount of mild soap (baby shampoo or gentle dish soap works well)
- Gently blot — do not rub — the soiled area
- Rinse the cloth with clean water and blot again to remove soap residue
- Allow to air dry completely before display or storage — do not use direct heat
Machine Washing (When Safe)
For plush toys that are safe to machine wash (confirmed by care label), follow these guidelines:
- Temperature: Cold or 30°C maximum. Hot water causes shrinkage, colour bleeding, and fill clumping
- Cycle: Delicate or gentle cycle only. Standard or heavy cycles damage fabric surfaces and loosen stitching
- Protection: Place the plush inside a laundry mesh bag or a pillow case to prevent surface abrasion against other items and machine components
- Detergent: Mild, dye-free laundry detergent. Avoid fabric softener — it can flatten pile fabric and leave residue
Drying Plush Toys
Drying is actually more damaging than washing for most plush toys. Avoid:
- Tumble drying — the heat and mechanical action damage fabric pile, loosen embroidery, and can melt synthetic fibres
- Direct sunlight drying for extended periods — UV exposure causes colour fading
- Direct heat sources (radiators, hairdryers on high heat)
The correct method is air drying at room temperature in a well-ventilated space. Gently reshape the plush while damp and allow to dry completely (12–24 hours for standard sizes) before storage.
Restoring Flattened Pile
If pile fabric has become flattened or matted after washing, use a soft-bristled pet brush (slicker brush) to gently brush the surface in the direction of the pile while the fabric is still slightly damp. This restores the fluffy texture to near-new condition.
