The visual design of your mascot gets all the attention, but the functional specifications — how well the performer can see, how cool they can stay, how freely they can move — determine whether the costume actually gets used. An uncomfortable, impractical mascot costume will spend most of its life in a storage room regardless of how good it looks. Use this checklist when reviewing your costume specifications with your manufacturer.
Vision Checklist
- ✓ Minimum 120-degree horizontal field of view confirmed
- ✓ Adequate downward visibility to see the ground within 1.5 metres of the performer's feet (critical for stair and curb navigation)
- ✓ Vision panels made of dark mesh that is opaque from outside but transparent from inside
- ✓ Vision panels positioned at the correct height for your specified performer height range
- ✓ No vision obstructions caused by accessories, hat brims, or character features
- ✓ Vision panel tested under actual use conditions (not just in a studio)
Ventilation Checklist

- ✓ Fan battery life confirmed adequate for intended performance window (minimum 2-hour runtime recommended)
- ✓ Air intake channels from body suit into head cavity
- ✓ Moisture-wicking interior lining on body suit
- ✓ Ventilation panels at underarm, inner thigh, and back
- ✓ Total costume weight confirmed within performer safety limits (head weight typically should not exceed 2.5–3 kg for extended wear)
Mobility Checklist
- ✓ Full arm range of motion tested — can the performer wave, gesture, and hug without restriction?
- ✓ Leg mobility tested — can the performer walk naturally, climb stairs, kneel, and sit?
- ✓ Shoes sized appropriately for the performer's actual shoe size with safe footing (non-slip soles)
- ✓ All zips and closures accessible by the performer without assistance, or clearly documented as requiring a handler
- ✓ Quick-release mechanism confirmed on head attachment for emergency removal
- ✓ Body suit tailored to the specific performer size (or size range if multiple performers will wear it)
Durability and Maintenance Checklist
- ✓ Body suit interior confirmed machine washable at 30°C
- ✓ Surface fabric UV-resistant if outdoor use is planned
- ✓ Spare parts identified (replacement fan batteries, touch-up fabric, spare fasteners)
